5 The need for a reference model
for agent-based modeling and
simulation
This chapter highlights why a reference model for agent-based model-
ing and simulation is needed. Current problems and needs concerning
design, development and application of agent-based modeling and
simulation are presented first. Afterwards, terminology and purpose
of reference models are presented, followed by requirements for a
reference model for agent-based modeling and simulation.
5.1 Current problems and needs of agent-based
modeling and simulation
Building upon related work presented in chapters 2.3 and 2.4, the
following sections summarize current problems and needs in the area
of agent-based modeling and simulation.
5.1.1 Weak definitions of basic terms and concepts
Although currently in widespread use, the foundations of agent-based
modeling and simulation appear to be a lot weaker compared to
alternative modeling paradigms [69]. Surprisingly, this includes am-
biguous definitions of basic terms (e.g., which elements comprise an
agent-based model and how are they related to each other) as well as
missing definitions of advanced concepts (e. g., what is to be under-
stood exactly by the simulation of an agent-based model) [91, 60].
