Bronx Museum of the Arts This hulk of modernity plunked amid the Art Deco restraint of the Grand
Concourse puts on adventurous shows. Most of the artists exhibited here have logged time as Boogie Down res-
idents. If not, they'll represent some aspect of New York's cultural diversity. In celebration of a 40th birthday, the
museum recently dropped its suggested admission to become full-time free.

Carnegie Hall The Rose Museum recounts the practice, practice, practice it takes to get to this storied mu-
sic hall. A chronology and memorabilia are on view, in addition to temporary exhibits on Carnegie legends such
as the Gershwins, Maria Callas, and Leonard Bernstein.

Center for Jewish History This multifloor center hosts several simultaneous exhibitions, from photo
shows to manuscripts to paintings, most documenting Jewish contributions to American society. Artifacts are
well lit, and exhibit notes are informative without running on too long. Pass through the metal detector and get
a badge at the front desk. Everything is free except for the Yeshiva University Museum galleries, which are $8
(although they're free on Mon and Wed nights, and Fri middays).

The Chancellor Robert R. Livingston Masonic Library of Grand Lodge The museum front room of
the Masons' library is adorned with several display cases. Most artifacts are of limited interest to non-Masons, al-
though there is a grandfather clock that watched over George Washington's visits to a Yorktown, Virginia, lodge.
More interesting are the tours of the larger building, which show of colorful, immaculate meeting rooms and
a ballroom whose design was lifted for the Titanic. No appointment is necessary; a greeter will meet you by the
rear elevators.

Derfner Judaica Museum The Hebrew Home at Riverdale hosts this newly expanded display of historic
Judaica, which ranges from mezuzot to Persian ivory paintings to miniature folk-art arks. More recent treasures
are interspersed as well, like an Israeli copper Hanukkah lamp, and a painting by Zygmunt Menkes. A sculpture
garden and Hudson views further sweeten the pot for a jaunt to the Bronx.

Federal Hall National Memorial A former U.S. custom house, this columned Wall Street museum now
recounts the long and storied history of its site. The renovated building offers free weekday guided tours on the
hour, from 10am to 3pm (no tour at noon). See p. 313 in chapter 8 for a full review.
