In-Depth Information
New York's many parks include the popular High Line, a repurposed elevated rail line that's become one of the most popular destinations in the city.
When it comes to culture, New Yorkers have so many amazing options it's probably inevitable that we start tak-
ing our bounty for granted. We sometimes forget that many of the world's great treasures have found their way
to our island and its surrounding boroughs. New York is in a constant state of transformation, but a lot of history
has survived, too, in houses, churches, and museums. Foundations and galleries protect New York's cutting-edge
reputation, putting on thousands of risk-taking avant-garde art shows every year. What's most amazing, given
the out-of-control nature of New York rents, is how easy it is to access these jewels on the cheap. Many museums
let the public in for free, and many more either have pay-what-you-wish days or evenings or admission prices
that are ”suggested contributions.” If it all seems overwhelming, you can get a professional to guide you through
the cultural landscape: New York has a bushel of free tours as well. Just remember to get out there and take ad-
vantage—nothing lasts forever.
