No-Tell Boatel
It ain't exactly Cunard, but this ramshackle compound in the Far Rockaways will let you sleep on the water from just $55 a
night. The Boatel ( 718/945-4500; www.marina59.com ) is a collection of abandoned power boats moored in Somerville
Basin, with views toward Jamaica Bay. (There are also views of JFK air traffic, the projects, and a couple of wandering
goats.) The whole thing is somewhat less than street legal, so that nightly rate is a “donation,” put toward a visit to an “art
installation.” The vessels are artist-decorated, and movies and lectures make for communal entertainment in the even-
ings. You can choose from 16 berths ($55-$105 per night), most sleeping two to four, with room for more to come aboard.
The emphasis is on adventure, not pampering. Pack a flashlight, a sleeping bag, and food for grilling. Open Wednesdays
through Sundays, mid-May through October. Reserve early, as the cabins fill up quickly. 59-14 Beach Channel Dr., Far
Rockaway, Queens. By subway, take the Far Rockaway/Mott Ave. branch of the A train to Beach 60th St.

furnishings provide character. The house is a short walk to the Staten Island Yankees (p. 285) and even closer to
the Staten Island Ferry Terminal, where you can take a free ride across the harbor to Manhattan. Singles are just
$85, and doubles $120, with shared bathrooms.
