Broadway Hotel & Hostel The approach here is “boutique hostel,” lending a cosmopolitan touch to backpacker-
friendly rates. Sleek design and a social, international crowd mark the lobby and common space. Upstairs is a
mix of hostel bunk beds and sedate private-bath rooms. The former is a great deal—there are only two berths to
a room, meaning you can double up with a friend for $68 a night, or take a chance on a share for just $34. (At
peak times, this price will double.) The communal bathrooms are clean and modern, and the hotel provides both
linens and daily housekeeping.

Hostelling International New York The largest hostel in the U.S. occupies this block-long Victorian-Gothic edi-
fice, built in 1883. With 624 beds, there's a lot of room at the inn, divided into male, female, and coed dorm
spaces. Rooms sleep 6, 8, 10, or 12, with discounts for the larger spaces. A night starts at $30 and goes up to $45
for the dorms, with an extra $3 charged if you're not a member of Hostelling International (an annual member-
ship can be purchased there for $28). With hundreds of youthful guests, there's a ton of social potential, some of
it facilitated by the hostel. Free or inexpensive city tours run daily, and there are pub-crawls and nightclub visits
at night. Linens and towels are provided.

7 Harlem
Under $150
Harlem Bed & Breakfast “B&B” is probably pushing it as a designation, as this place is youthful and informal
enough to pass for a hostel. The location is a classic 1896 brownstone in central Harlem, with some period details
surviving inside. Of the 13 units, 10 have a shared bath, bringing prices for a single down as low as $75. If you're
traveling in a group, a satellite location hooks up two-bedroom apartments and larger, starting at $395 a night.

Harlem Flophouse Harlem is experiencing another renaissance, and if you'd like to spend the night a couple
of blocks from Bill Clinton's office, this 1890s row house is a great pick. The flophouse name refers to the mu-
sicians and artists who crashed here back in the day. Rooms are comfortable, furnished with tasteful antiques.
Bathrooms are shared between two rooms, and if you're booking in summer, keep in mind this place was built
long before the advent of air-conditioning.

8 Brooklyn
Under $100
The New York Loft Hostel Bushwick's blend of young, arty energy and rundown streets is about as close as you
can get to the East Village of the '80s. (There's even an offshoot of the original Life Café immortalized in Rent. )
