In-Depth Information
Chelsea Inn
Dual Queen Anne-style town houses from 1880 do the hosting at this central spot. Interiors are
homey, with a feel more like an apartment than a hotel. There's no elevator, but staff will book you in a ground
floor unit if stairs are an issue. Some units have shared bathrooms (it's a two-to-one ratio), but those rooms start
at $89 a night for a single and $129 for a twin.

Chelsea Lodge
The town house blocks near the General Theological Seminary are as quaint as any in New York,
and this unmarked brownstone will help you feel like a local traversing them. The building's original woodwork
has been restored and the full-size beds are reasonably comfortable. Rooms have their own sinks and shower
stalls, although toilets are shared out in the hallway. For that privation, you'll get a deep discount on a night in
a prime location (a single is $134; double occupancy is only $10 more).
Tight quarters make this better
for couples than shares.

Hotel 17
This Victorian-accented spot is a pocket of affordability between the East Village, Union Square, and
Gramercy. Big with the Euro backpacking crew, there's a hostel-like energy, but the rooms are modern, and fresh
off a recent renovation. Singles with shared baths go for as low as $79, and there are triples and quads (a low-sea-
son triple can be as cheap as $109). If the place looks familiar, perhaps you've seen it in Woody Allen's
Manhattan
Murder Mystery.

Chelsea International Hostel
You can't do much better location-wise than these typical hostel rooms clustered
around a courtyard in the heart of Chelsea. International travelers love this well-managed place. It's $58 to $78
(depending on the season) per person for a two-bed dorm with a shared bathroom. A private double with its
own bathroom starts at $165. Free Wi-Fi, continental breakfast, and linens are included, but bring your own tow-
el.

Chelsea Star Hotel
The youthful focus of this small hostel is fitting given that Madonna lived here when she
was 22. As it's on a busy corner, rooms can be noisy, but nothing out of line given the pricing. There's a lot of
versatility here, with rooms ranging from coed dorm beds ($55-$60 a night, most with in-room bathrooms) to
shared-bathroom singles ($129-$139) and doubles ($149-$159). If you're traveling with a posse, consider one of
the apartment suites next door, which sleep four to six people ($209-$369).
