Dave's Since 1963, this family-run shop has been outfitting New Yorkers for construction work, rough weather,
and denim-clad nights on the town. Brands with ample blue-collar cred are well-represented (Carhartt, Dickies,
Redwing), and the Levi's selection is close to exhaustive. Outgoing staff will help you navigate the store and the
cash register will treat you kindly, with prices often 30% off the nearby Levi's store. 581 Sixth Ave., btw. 16th and 17th Sts.

H&M Swedish discounter Hennes & Mauritz knocks off the latest styles at low, low prices. They specialize in hip
looks for adults, and as such they're a big hit with the teens. Durability is not the greatest, though it is about
what you'd expect for these prices. 1328 Broadway, at 34th St. 646/473-1165. www.hm.com . Subway: B/D/F/M/N/Q/R to 34th St./Herald Sq.;

Joe Fresh The pop of bright colors here is a reminder that this Canadian chain started out selling clothes from
inside grocery stores. Some designs can be clunky, but generally this place is like a fashion-forward Old Navy.
Close-outs offer good discounts, on top of $10 T's and four-packs of socks for $8. 510 Fifth Ave., at 43rd St. 212/764-1730.

Loehmann's When the original Barneys faltered, longtime discount fave Loehmann's was quick to fill much of
the square footage. Casual wear comes in at one-third to two-thirds off the department-store prices, and you can
reel in even deeper discounts on the likes of Donna Karan and Versace inside the “Back Room.” Great prices
for women's shoes, too, and there's an underpublicized men's floor. 101 Seventh Ave., btw. 16th and 17th sts. 212/352-0856.

Rainbow Shops When the new women's and girl's clothing lines come out, Rainbow wastes no time in coming
up with affordable copies. Urban styles predominate, with the target audience well under 25. They have shoes
and accessories, lots of plus sizes, and you won't have to part with a pot of gold. Durability is not the
greatest here, so if you find something you like think about getting more than one . 110-114 Delancey St., btw. Essex and

Shoe Ins & Outs
All the miles New Yorkers log as pedestrians help explain the occasional obsessive bent applied to our shoe
shopping. My favorite footwear cluster can be found downtown. Lower Broadway from East 4th Street down to
Canal has some great options, often doubled up with cheap jean retailers. NYU undergrads haunt this part of
the city, and prices tend to accommodate student budgets.
DSW This chain came all the way from Ohio to liberate New Yorkers from high shoe prices. Their warehouse-
style megastores are packed with recent releases. Special sale areas have the best buys, with markdowns exceed-
ing 75%. Ladies in particular will have to exhibit patience, as their selection goes on forever. 40 E. 14th St., 3rd floor, btw.
