Thames & Bocker Ample cheap warehouse space was the fertilizer for Bushwick's recent rise. The 6,000-square-
foot ground floor of OfficeOps gets put to good use with rack after rack of affordable hipster boots, belts, shoes,
jackets, plaid pants, and T's. 57 Thames St., enter at Knickerbocker Ave. 718/497-1331. www.lepointvalue.com . Subway: L to Morgan Ave.
Unique Thrift Store Fulton Mall in downtown Brooklyn has long been an affordable shopping magnet (there are
over 230 stores here, including a Gap Outlet). My favorite is this low-priced envoy of a Minnesota thrift chain. In
the basement you'll find rack after rack of women's clothes, on top of $2.49 hardcover books (paperbacks go for a
buck less). Upstairs is men's and children's. It's all well organized and the clothing is in good shape, if not always
representing the height of style. There's a lot of acreage here, so block out some time. 408 Fulton Mall, btw. Gallatin Place and

The Urban Jungle Vintage/Thrift Warehouse A love of vintage that approaches the level of fetish imbues this
massive Bushwick space. You can find accessories and art on top of the usual sneaker, T, housedress, and leather
jacket suspects. Prices are good and the selection goes nigh on forever. The same holds true for the sibling loca-
tions of this minichain, which go by various names (see p. 193 above for No Relation). 118 Knickerbocker Ave., btw. Thames

Designer Consignment Stores
It's not that hard to look like a million bucks in NYC, even if your clothes budget tops out at a much lower
number. New York's best consignment shops carry loads of pre-owned, vintage, and overstock garments in near-
showroom condition. The duds are by no means dirt cheap, but for the high end of design, the prices are as low
as they come.
Encore For resale women's wear, the Upper East Side is the place to be. Encore is the best of the best, chock-
full of big, big names on two floors. A lot of it cost a fortune the first time around and it's still not cheap, but
periodic sales can bring luxury into reach. Some of Jackie O's wardrobe made its curtain call here (which says a
lot about the store's demographic). 1132 Madison Ave., btw. 84th and 85th sts., 2nd floor. 212/879-2850. www.encoreresale.com . Subway:
4/5/6 to 86th St.
Ina When SexandtheCity 's wardrobe department sold of its leftovers, of course it turned to Ina. This designer
consignment shop carries the height of style, including the likes of Halston, Prada, and Daryl K. The racks are
filled with both vintage and current items, and they're always in excellent shape. Shoes and accessories are here
as well, and everything is marked way, way down (though outside of the sales, it's still not cheap). Men can get
in on the action at the coed Chelsea and NoHo locations, or gents-only 19 Prince. NoLita, 21 Prince St., btw. Mott and Elizabeth

Michael's Designer wear for women is the focus of this much-loved two-story consignment boutique. The names
are familiar—Chanel, YSL, Prada, and Gucci—but the prices are barely recognizable. As pickers, they're very
careful, making sure no rips or stains make it onto the floor. 1041 Madison Ave., 2nd floor, btw. 79th and 80th sts. 212/737-7273.

Tokyo Joe When hipsters need the good stuff, they turn straight to this designer consignment shop. Cramped
quarters can make for tough browsing, but the clothes themselves are in excellent shape. Don't miss the big sec-
