In-Depth Information
The Garment District
The huge old buildings in the 30s between Madison and Eighth avenues still bear faded advertisements for the
furriers and milliners whose shops and factories filled the lofts here. Although much of the manufacturing has
moved, the garment trade is still active in ground-floor showrooms. Most are wholesale only, particularly the
stretch on Broadway that runs into the 20s. A few places are open to the retail public. Toward the west, Penn
Station is a hub for light rail and subway trains, and the streets nearby are a natural mecca for shoppers. Several
big discounters are stationed here, as is the largest store in the world, Macy's. For garment shopping, however,
downtown is a better bet.
Subway: B/D/F/M/N/Q/R to 34th St./Herald Sq.; 1/2/3 or A/C/E to 34th St./Penn Station.
