Instant Massaging
Swedish Institute College of Health Sciences Swedish massage has been around for a couple of centuries now,
but you don't need to travel all the way to Stockholm to improve your circulation. Since its founding in 1916, this
institution has dedicated itself to natural approaches to health, which it makes available to the public at reduced
rates. You'll be worked on by a student, but they're very well-trained. Two clinical programs are offered, stress-
reduction (for the healthy) and therapeutic massage (for people with medical conditions). The former program
provides eight 1-hour sessions for $240, and the latter is 12 hours in 12 weeks for $360. Both programs are very
popular, so registration is by mail only, with the form available on the website.

Qigong Show
The methods offered by Chinatown's massage joints are as varied as the neighborhood itself. Everything from shiatsu to re-
flexology to my personal favorite, qigong, is available (and you don't even need to get all the way to Chinatown to enjoy
them). Qigong, one of the world's oldest methods of healing, is the root of many popular forms of massage therapy. At 88
Chinese QiGong Tui Na, trained therapists with startlingly strong hands will expertly knead your knotted muscles until
you're ready to weep with relief. The space is bare bones but clean, with curtains and shoulder-height walls for privacy, and
soothing Zen-like music tinkling in the background. The cost is $42 an hour, which leaves some room for much-appreciated
tipping. 329 Bowery, btw. 2nd and 3rd sts., basement level. 212/ 260-7829. Daily 11am-10pm. Subway: 6 to Bleecker
St.; B/D/F/M to Broadway/Lafayette St.
