Frugal Legal
As a freelance writer, when I snap my fingers clients come running, tardy back pay in hand. Not everybody has the juice to
ensure justice is always served, though, and for that we should be thankful for LegalServicesNYC ( 646/442-3600;
www.legalservicesnyc.org ) , which keeps neighborhood offices in all five boroughs. The group provides free counsel on a
range of issues, from employment, education, housing, family, and domestic violence to income tax and beyond. Families,
children, seniors, people living under the poverty line, and folks with disabilities or HIV are the main constituency, although
consumers and people protecting their communities are also supported.
The pro bono wing of the NYC bar association, the CityBarJusticeCenter ( www.nycbar.org ) , also provides free help to
low-income New Yorkers. For 15 years now, their Legal Hotline ( 212/626-7383 ) has dispensed advice on civil legal is-
sues from bankruptcy to housing law. The hotline runs weekdays from 9am to 1pm, with 3:30-to-5:30pm shifts on Tuesday
and Thursday afternoons.
