In-Depth Information
The beautiful Reading Room of the New York Public Library is one of the free things in New York City that helps make everyday life enjoyable.
Anybody who thinks it's easy to live in New York is sitting on a mountain of cash. You don't have to look any
further than the housing market to find trouble. For the privilege of paying $1,800 a month to live in a noisy
veal pen, chances are you'll be hit with a 15% broker's fee. Healthcare, health insurance, health clubs—just about
everything can come with a huge price tag. Yet 8.2 million of us stay. The experience of being a New Yorker is too
exciting and rich for us to complain (much) about the costs of living. We'd much rather talk about which neigh-
borhood our apartment is in. Besides, the city presents plenty of free and cheap opportunities to improve your
quality of life, from classes and lectures to grooming and recreation. Leases notwithstanding, it is quite possible
to live large on small budgets in NYC.
