ITALY
The EN Venezia runs between Ljubljana and Venice (four hours) and though the normal
one-way fare is €25, there's also a few Smart Price tickets available for €15 on some
trains. Another possibility is to go first to Nova Gorica (€8, three hours), walk to Gorizia
then take an Italian train to Venice (about €8).
GERMANY & AUSTRIA
There are three direct trains a day between Ljubljana and Munich (€72.40, six hours) via
Villach and Salzburg; one carries on to Frankfurt (€144.40, 10 hours). There is also a train
from Salzburg (€19, four hours) to Ljubljana and another from Villach (€18.20, two
hours).
To get to Vienna (€61.80, six hours) from Ljubljana there is the direct EC Emona , or
five other trains which require a change at Maribor. Graz (€31.40, three hours) trains in-
clude a change at Maribor.
While fares to Vienna and Graz from Ljubljana and Maribor are high, so-called
SparSchiene fares as low as €19 (valid for travel in one direction in 2nd class) apply on
certain trains at certain times. Also, a Praga Spezial fare is available for only €29 to those
travelling to Prague via Salzburg, but the number of these discounted tickets per train is
limited.
HUNGARY
The EN Venezia links Ljubljana with Budapest (€49.80, nine hours) via Zagreb. The IC
Citadella goes via Ptuj and Hodoš. There are Budapest Spezial fares available for as low
as €29/39 one way/return on certain trains and at certain times.
SWITZERLAND
The overnight MV414/415 links Ljubljana directly with Zürich (€89.60, 14½ hours) via
Schwarzach-St Veit; the SparSchiene (€29) and SparNight (with couchette €39) offer
enormous savings on the standard fare.
Sea
The Prince of Venice ( 05-617 80 00; www.kompas-online.net ) is a 39.6m-long, high-
speed catamaran that runs day trips between Izola and Piran and Venice from April to
October. It departs Izola at 8am (Piran at 7.30am) and arrives in Venice at 11am; the re-
turn journey departs at 5pm and arrives back at Izola/Piran at 8pm. The schedule changes
according to the season, but essentially there are sailings on Saturday from mid-April to
October, with between seven and 15 sailings a week from May to September. Less-fre-
