Train
Slovenian Railways (Slovenske Železnice, SŽ; 01-291 33 32; www.slo-zeleznice.si )
links up with the European railway network via Austria (Villach, Salzburg, Graz, Vienna),
Germany (Munich, Frankfurt), Czech Republic (Prague), Croatia (Zagreb, Rijeka), Hun-
gary (Budapest), Italy (Venice), Switzerland (Zürich) and Serbia (Belgrade).
International direct trains include EuroCity (EC) ones linking Ljubljana with Vienna as
well as Salzburg and Munich. InterCity (IC) trains connect Maribor with Vienna and
Graz, and Ljubljana with Villach, Zagreb and Belgrade. Express trains run via Ljubljana
between Zürich and Belgrade, Vienna and Zagreb, Munich and Zagreb, and Munich and
Rijeka. EuroNight (EN) between Budapest and Venice go via Ljubljana and Zagreb.
Seat reservations (€3.50), compulsory only on trains to and from Italy, are included in
the ticket price. On night trains, sleepers and couchettes are available.
DISCOUNTS & PASSES
Undiscounted international tickets on Slovenian Railways trains are valid for two months.
Certain fares bought at special offer are valid for one month, while others are valid only
for the day and train indicated on the ticket. Half-price tickets are available to children
between the ages of six and 12 years.
A Global Pass from InterRail ( www.interrailnet.com ) covers some 30 European coun-
tries and can be purchased by nationals of European countries (or residents of at least six
months). A pass offers 1st-/2nd-class travel for five days within a 10-day period (€289/
219), 10 days within a 22-day period (€429/315), 22 continuous days (€549/409), or one
month (€709/525). Discounts are available for those under 26.
InterRail now offers a 'One Country Pass' valid for rail travel in Slovenia only.
