Although it's not a public holiday, St Martin's Day (11 November) is important as on this day the winemakers'
mošt
(must; fermenting grape juice) officially becomes wine. In the evening families traditionally dine on goose
with
mlinci
(thin dried flat bread) and red cabbage and drink new wine.
The selection of fresh vegetables and fruit is not great in the dead of winter but come spring and a cycle of
bounty begins: from wild asparagus (Istria) and
ledenka
(ice lettuce) grown in the Trnovo district of Ljubljana to
strawberries (Janče) and cherries (Goriška Brda), through all the stone fruits to apples (Kozjansko), chestnuts and
nuts. And then there's the second national sport: mushroom-gathering.
Food festivals, usually timed to welcome the seasonal arrival of a certain fruit, vegetable, nut, wine or even
fish, are among the red-letter days of the annual calendar in Slovenia and should not be missed should you be in
the area. The following is just a sampling of what to expect.
