1867
A number of Slovenes are incorporated into Hungary with the Compromise of 1867, an
agreement creating the Dual Monarchy of Austria (the empire) and Hungary (the king-
dom).
1918
Austria-Hungary loses WWI and the political system collapses with the armistice of 11
November; the Serbia-dominated Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes is estab-
lished.
1929
King Alexander seizes power, abolishes the constitution and proclaims the Kingdom of
Yugoslavia - only to be assassinated five years later by a Macedonian terrorist in
France.
1937
The Communist Party of Slovenia (KPS) forms under the tutelage of Josip Broz Tito
and the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (KPJ).
1945
Occupied Slovenia is liberated by the Partisans in May and 12,000 Domobranci and
anti-communist civilians are executed the following month; Slovenia is included in the
Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia.
1948
Yugoslavia distances itself from and then breaks with the Soviet Union; exclusion from
the markets of the Soviet bloc forces Tito to look to the West.
1956
Tito, in association with India's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and the president
of Egypt Gamal Abdul Nasser, founds the Non-Aligned Movement.
