The Koroška Gallery of Fine Arts, on the 1st floor of the former town hall, counts among
its permanent collection African folk art, bronze sculptures by Franc Berneker
(1874-1932) and naive paintings by Jože Tisnikar (1928-98). Tisnikar is among the most
interesting and original artists in Slovenia, and his obsession with corpses, distorted fig-
ures and oversized insects is at once disturbing and funny. Outside the town hall is the

(Cerkev Sv Elizabete; Trg Svobode) The sombre Church of St Elizabeth was built in 1251
and is the town's oldest structure. Aside from the Romanesque nave and a couple of win-
dows, almost everything here is baroque, including the massive gold altar and pulpit, and
the altar paintings done by local artist Franc Mihael Strauss (1647-1740) and his son
Janez Andrej Strauss (1721-82).
