EKO MUZEJ
Halfway between Šempeter and Celje but worth the detour, this museum ( 710 04 34; www.ekomuzej-hmelj.si ;
Aškerčeva 9a, Žalec; adult/child €2.5/1; Mon/Wed/Fri 3-7pm, Tue/Thu/Sat 9am-1pm) is dedicated to the hop
and the noble art of brewing - a speciality of the region. August to October are the best times to visit, when their are
plenty of outdoor activities and demonstrations, from hop-picking, crowning of the hop princess and guided walks.
And yes, you can do beer tastings too.
Getting There & Away
Bus Intercity buses run frequently to Mozirje (€4.10, 50 minutes), Rogaška Slatina (€4.10,
one hour) and Rogatec and Zreče (€3.60, 40 minutes). Count on up to six buses on week-
days and two at the weekend to Ljubljana (€7.20, 1½ hours) and Maribor (€6.70, 1½
hours). Other destinations accessible by bus from Celje: Gornji Grad (€5.60, 1½ hours),
Logarska Dolina (€7.20, two hours), and Murska Sobota (€11.10, 2¾ hours).
For local destinations such as Šempeter (€2.60, 20 minutes), Škofja Vas, Šentjur, Pre-
bold and Žalec, go to the bus stops south of the train station on Ulica XIV Divizije.
Train Celje is a good rail hub. From Ljubljana (€6.60 to €11.60, 1½ hours) you can reach
Celje up to two dozen times a day by regular train and six times a day by ICS express
train.
Celje is also on the line linking Zidani Most (connections to and from Ljubljana and
Zagreb) with Maribor (€5.50 to €9.90, one hour, 67km, half-hourly) and the Austrian cit-
ies of Graz and Vienna.
A spur line links Celje with Šempeter up to nine times a day Monday to Saturday in
each direction. A third line connects Celje with Zabok in Croatia via Rogaška Slatina
(€3.25, 50 minutes), Rogatec and Dobovec. Up to seven trains arrive and depart on week-
days but only a couple at the weekend.
