Mithraism and Christianity shared many ritual aspects and competed strongly. Both religions involved the birth
of a deity on winter solstice, shepherds, death and resurrection, and a form of baptism. Devotees of Mithraism
knelt when they worshipped and a common meal - a 'communion' of bread and water - was a feature of the
liturgy.
LAHINJA COUNTRY PARK

This 259-hectare park, about 9km south of Črnomelj, is a protected karst area rich in bird-
life and is the source of the Lahinja River. Trails criss-cross the area. The areas around
Pusti Gradac and Veliki Nerajec are treasure troves of prehistoric finds and caves. The
Lahinja Park Information Centre ( 031 705 519, 305 74 28) is in Veliki Nerajec at
house No 18a. There's also a shop here selling local folk art and crafts including distinct-
ive 'kingfisher' whistles.
Kolpa Valley

The 118km-long Kolpa River marks the border with Croatia, and is the warmest and one
of the cleanest rivers in the country. As a result, it has become a popular recreational area
for swimming, fishing and boating, especially around the village of Vinica and to the
northeast (and downstream) Adlešiči .
Sights
Žuniči
In the village of Žuniči, about 10km northeast of Vinica, keep your eyes open for tradi-
tional rural architecture, especially the farmsteads at Nos 2 and 5, which are sometimes
open to the public.
