AROUND BREŽICE
MOKRICE CASTLE
07 / ELEV 200M
Mokrice Castle, about 10km southeast of Brežice, is the loveliest fortress in the Posavje
region and is also a luxury hotel. With grounds including pear orchards and a 20-hectare
'English park' full of rare plants, it's worth an excursion from Brežice.
The castle today dates from the 16th century, but there are bits and pieces going back to
Roman times built into the structure. It's supposedly haunted by the ghost of the 17th-cen-
tury countess Barbara, who committed suicide here after her lover failed to return from
sea. She's particularly active on her name day (4 December) when she spends the night
rolling cannonballs around the joint.
The 29 rooms at the Golf Hotel Mokrice Castle ( 457 42 40; www.terme-catez.si ; s
€120-128, d €190-206, ste from €250; ) have beamed ceilings and period furniture,
and the huge suites have fireplaces. The Grad (mains €8.50-20; 7am-11pm) restaurant
is a gorgeous venue with fancy game and fish dishes, and classical music. The cellar has
dozens of different Slovenian wines available. Try some viljamovka, Mokrice's famous
pear brandy.
You can reach Mokrice from Brežice on the infrequent bus to the border town of
Obrežje (€1.80, 15 minutes). Better is by bicycle from Čatež - ask the TIC in Brežice for
their Cycling Booklet with four itineraries.
BIZELJSKO-SREMIČ WINE DISTRICT
07 / ELEV TO 175M
Cycling the 18km from Brežice to Bizeljsko is a great way to see the Bizeljsko-Sremič
wine country, stopping off whenever you see a gostilna, vinska klet (wine cellar) or repn-
ica (flint-stone cave for storing wine) that takes your fancy. In Bizeljsko, try some of the
local medium-dry whites and reds at the Vinska Klet Pinterič ( 041 520 481, 495 12
66; Bizeljska cesta 115; 10am-7pm) or at Gostilna Šekoranja ( 495 13 10;
Bizeljska cesta 72; 8am-11pm Tue-Sun) . In the nearby village of Stara Vas, visit the
Vinoteka Pri Peču ( 452 01 03; 10am-midnight Wed-Mon) or Repnica Pudvoi (
