Grad €€
( 384 87 00; starters €6-23, mains €14-25; 6am-11pm) At the Hotel Grad Otočec,
this restaurant seats 45 people while the smaller Hunter's Room accommodates another
16. With ancient stone walls, stained glass and locally made artisan furniture, it's loaded
with atmosphere (check out the plexiglas 'trophies' in the Hunter's Room). Specialities
are game and fish; try the unusual beech-leaf soup followed by the red trout with a glass
of Dolenjska Cviček and blueberry strudel. The four-course set menus, one of them for
vegetarians, are excellent value at €35.
Tango €
( 384 86 00; meals from €10; noon-11pm Sun-Thu, noon-1am Fri & Sat) Diagon-
ally opposite the Hotel Šport building, the Tango should be a distant second choice to the
Grad, but given how fast the Grad fills up with nonguests and wedding parties, you may
have no choice.

Gostilna Vovko €
( 308 56 03; www.gostilna-vovkoi.si ; Ratež 48; starters €3.50-6, mains €7-16.50;
11am-10pm Tue-Sat, 11am-4pm Sun) If you happen to be under your own steam (of two
or four wheels), head south from Otočec for a couple of kilometres to the village of Ratež
and try this excellent local gostilna serving barbecued meats and such local specialities as
pumpkin gnocchi and Dolenjska's own take on žlikrofi ('raviolis' stuffed with millet por-
ridge and topped with crackling).
