Otočec Castle Hotel is one of the most atmospheric places to stay in Slovenia, but since its
epic 2008 renovation (in which they grafted an unsightly lift onto a castle tower) is now
off limits to all but the very well-heeled and gloved. The 10 rooms, with polished parquet
floors, oriental carpets, marble-topped tables and large baths, are of a uniform size, though
you could lose yourself in one of the half-dozen suites. There are lots of themed packages
(golf, cycling, wellness) on offer and guests get to use the thermal pools at Šmarješke
Toplice and Dolenjske Toplice free of charge.

more rural, this farmhouse in an idyllic valley in Sela pri Ratežu (house No 15), a hamlet
about 4km south of Otočec village, has nine double rooms (some with kitchen), a self-ca-
tering apartment for four and a recommended restaurant open for lunch and dinner and
specialising in trout and štruklji (dumplings made with cheese).

concrete-and-glass box opposite the castle, has 88 rooms, as well as 38 rooms in attractive

centre.

160 guests, is on a 2-hectare strip of land running along the south bank of the Krka with
its own grassy 'beach'. To reach it from the castle, cross the second bridge, turn left (east)
and walk for 300m.
