Getting There & Around
Buses run at least hourly north to Ljubljana (€5.60, one hour), and south to Kočevje
(€2.70, 30 minutes). The infrequent bus to Sodražica (€1.80, 15 minutes) is good for Nova
Štifta.

The Church of the Assumption of Mary (Cerkev Marije Vnebovzete; 041 747 188,
836 99 43; Nova Štifta 3; 10am-noon & 2-6pm) at Nova Štifta, in the foothills of the
Velika Gora 6km west of Ribnica, is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Slove-
nia. Completed in 1671, the baroque church is unusual for its octagonal shape.
The interior of the church, with its golden altars and pulpit, is blindingly ornate. In the
courtyard opposite the Franciscan monastery (where the church key is kept) stands a won-
derful old Dolenjska toplarji and a linden tree, planted in the mid-17th century, complete
with a tree house that has been there for over a century.
Dom na Travni Gori ( 836 63 33; travna .gora@gmail.com; Ravni Dol 43; per
person €18) , a guesthouse 905m up, with restaurant and 19 beds, can be reached in less
than an hour on a marked trail heading southwest from just opposite the monastery.
Stična

The abbey at Stična is the oldest monastery in Slovenia and one of the country's most im-
portant religious and cultural monuments. Only 35km from Ljubljana, it's an easy day trip
from the capital.
Stična is about 2.5km north of Ivančna Gorica, where you'll find the train station on
Sokolska ulica. Long-distance buses stop in front of the station.
