In-Depth Information
(Župnijska Cerkev Sv Štefana; Škrabčev trg) Built in 1868 on the site of earlier churches,
this parish church would not be of much interest were it not for the two striking towers ad-
ded by Jože Plečnik in the form of his signature pyramids in 1960 to replace the ones
toppled during WWII.
Štekliček House
(Štekličkova Hiša; Škrabčev trg 16) Opposite the parish church is Štekliček House, where
the 19th-century poet and patriot France Prešeren spent two years (1810-12) in what was
then the region's best-known school.
HISTORIC BUILDING

Mikel House, a lovely cream-and-white building dating from 1858, has exhibitions of
contemporary art and does double duty as the town's library.

Activities
Ribnica is the base for many excellent walks. A well-marked trail leads north of the town
for about 4.5km to the summit of Stene Sv Ana (963m), with fantastic views over the
Ribnica Valley; ask the TIC for a copy of the Natural Heritage of Ribnica pamphlet.
From the Jasnica recreational centre (on the way to Kočevje), a more difficult path
leads north about 6km to the junction with the Ribnica Alpine Trail. This joins up with the
E7 European Hiking Trail about 5km west of Velike Lašče.
