PORTOROŽ
05 / POP 2947
Every country with a coast has got to have a honky-tonk beach resort and Portorož
(Portorose in Italian) is Slovenia's. But the 'Port of Roses' is making a big effort to scrub
itself up. Portorož's sandy beaches are relatively clean, and there are pleasant spas and
wellness centres where you can take the waters or cover yourself in curative mud. The
vast array of accommodation options makes Portorož a useful fallback if everything's full
in Piran.
Portorož's main development looks on to the bay from Obala, but there are satellite re-
sorts and hotel complexes to the northwest at Bernardin and south near the Portorož Mar-
ina at Lucija. Buses stop opposite the main beach on Postajališka pot.

Forma Viva
( 671 20 80; www.obalne-galerije.si ) Perched atop the Seča Peninsula, Forma Viva is
an outdoor sculpture garden with some 130 works of art carved in stone. The real reason
for coming is the fantastic view of Portorož and Piran Bays. The salt pans at Sečovlje (
