This renovated old school in the idyllic hilltop Slovenian
Istrian village of Korte, 8km south of Izola, opened its doors as a hostel in late 2006 and
has become a winner among the
cognoscenti
. It's got 17 modern rooms with between two
and four beds and a couple of apartments with two bedrooms and a living room. You
could do your own cooking but the food at the nearby

The 52-room Hotel Marina, faced with chocolate-coloured glazed brick, couldn't be any
more central: it's right on the main square and fronting the harbour. Rates depend on the
season and whether your room faces the water and has a balcony. There's a very attractive
spa and wellness centre here.

This 174-bed hostel in the Srednja Gostinska in Turistična Šola (Middle
School of Catering and Tourism) overlooks the marina and welcomes foreign guests in
summer.
