Ptuj
12 To English speakers' ears the name might sound like a cartoon character spitting, but
Ptuj ( Click here ) is far more than a cheap one-liner. Instead, it's one of Slovenia's richest
historical towns. Everyone since the Romans has left their mark, and the centre is still a
maze of red roofs and medieval streets, dotted with churches, towers and museums, as well
as street cafes where you can enjoy the passing views. If you're there in February, look for
the riotous street theatre of the Kurentovanje festivities ( Click here ) . Ptuj is also within
easy reach of some of the country's best wine regions.
