Getting There & Away
Bus Expect buses every two hours or so to Ljubljana (€10.70, 2½ hours) via Postojna
(€6.70, 1½ hours). Other destinations include Bovec (€7.50, two hours) via Kobarid (€6,
1¼ hours), Idrija (€6.30, 1½ hours) and Piran (€10.70, three hours, daily) via Koper.
Between June and September, a daily bus crosses the Vršič Pass to Kranjska Gora
(€10.70, three hours).
Nova Gorica is an easy way to get to/from Italy; Italian bus 1 (€1) will whisk you from
Via G Caprin opposite the Nova Gorica train station to its counterpart in Gorizia.
Train About a half-dozen trains head northeast each day for Jesenice (€6.60, two hours)
via Most na Soči, and Bled Jezero (€6.20, 1¾ hours) - arguably Slovenia's most beautiful
train journey. In the other direction, an equal number of trains go to Sežana (€3.25, one
hour); change here for Ljubljana, or Trieste in Italy.
GORIŠKA BRDA

Goriška Brda, the hilly wine region, starts in Dobrovo , 13km to the northwest of Nova
Gorica. The Renaissance-style Dobrovo Castle (Grad Dobrovo; 395 95 86; Grajska
cesta 9; adult/child €2/1; 8am-4pm Tue-Fri, 10am-6pm Sat & Sun) , dating from 1606,
has a dozen rooms spread over three floors filled with elegant period furnishings and ex-
hibits on the wine industry. In the cellar there is a vinoteka ( 395 92 10;
11.30am-9pm Tue-Sun) where you can sample the local vintages (white rebula and
chardonnay or the pinot and merlot reds), with cheese and pršut (dry-cured ham).
More than 100 wineries offer tastings in Goriška Brda (always call ahead). The enorm-
ous Vinska Klet Goriška Brda ( 331 01 02; www.klet-brda.si ; Zadružna cesta 9;
tasting €10; 8am-7pm Mon-Fri, 8am-1pm Sat Apr-mid-Nov, short weekday hrs mid-
Nov-Mar) , which is just down the hill from the castle, has the largest wine cellar in
Slovenia. Another recommended winery is Erzetič ( 395 94 60; www.vina-erzet-
ic.com ; Višnjevik 25a) , 4km to the north.
This area has been under the influence of northern and central Italy since time imme-
