Built by the
Austrians in 1882 on the site of a 17th-century fortress above a 70m ravine on the Korit-
nica River, Kluže Fortress is 4km northeast of Bovec and worth the trip just for its loca-
tion. Even more awesome is the upper fortress (
Fort Herman
) built halfway up Mt
Rombon to the west in 1900 when Kluže proved to be obsolete. There's a permanent ex-
hibition on the ecology of the region and the history of the fortress.

family-run dairies, such as the in-town Ostan Cheese Dairy, which produces traditional
sheep's cheese. Ask the TIC for a copy of the pamphlet

pamphlet, which lists 16 trips of various degrees of dif-
ficulty. Most sports agencies rent bicycles and mountain bikes from €7.50/€18 per hour/
day to €39/85 for three days/one week.
