Walking & Hiking
Popular with walkers and joggers, the marked Trail of Remembrance (Pot Spominov)
runs for 34km around Ljubljana where German barbed wire once completely enclosed the
city during WWII. The easiest places to reach the trail are from the AMZS headquarters
(Slovenian Automobile Association; take bus 6, 8 or 11 to the AMZS stop), or from Trg
Komandanta Staneta just northwest of the central office of the public transport authority
LPP (take bus 1 to the Remiza stop). You can also join it from the northwestern side of
Žale Cemetery (take bus 19 to the Nove Žale stop), or south of Trnovo (take bus 9 to the
Veliki Štradon stop).
An easy and very popular hiking destination from Ljubljana is Šmarna Gora , a 669m-
high hill above the Sava River, 12km northwest of Ljubljana. Take bus 25 from Slovenska
cesta or Gosposvetska cesta to the Medno stop, or bus 8 to Brod and begin walking.
Another way to go is via the Smlednik bus from the main station and then follow the
marked path from the 12th-century Smlednik Castle.
