properties of gel-AuNP composites. 67 A fatty acid amide of L-alanine
(48, Chart 8.23) that formed stable gels in various aliphatic and aromatic
hydrocarbons was used as the template to develop the hybrid gels. 68 The
molecular structure of the capping agents anchored on the nanoparticles'
surface was varied such as n-alkanethiols (AuC m12 , m ΒΌ 4, 6 and 10),
cholesterol-based thiol (AuChol) and p-thiocresol (AuPhMe) to probe the
gel-nanoparticles interaction. The average diameter of the nanoparticles was
3-6 nm depending on the capping agent used. The incorporation of the AuNPs
within the gel had a profound impact on the morphological features of the
resulting composite as observed by SEM. The native organogel had a fibrous
network, whereas the incorporation of AuC 12 resulted in the coalescing of the
fibres. On the other hand ''rolled- tubular'' type and platelet aggregates were
obtained in the
case of AuChol and AuPhMe
(Figures 8.11a-d).
