Border Crossings
FRANCE
The main points of entry by road include:
Coast Road From Nice on what becomes the A10 motorway along the Ligurian coast (then take the A7 from Genoa
north to Milan).
Mont Blanc Tunnel Begins near Chamonix and connects with the A5 for Turin and Milan.
SWITZERLAND
Grand St Bernard Tunnel Connects with the A5, and the Simplon tunnel connects with the SS33 road that leads to
Lake Maggiore.
St Gotthard Tunnel The A2 runs from Basel, through the tunnel and into Ticino via Bellinzona to Lake Lugano.
By Train The main rail lines from Switzerland into this part of Italy cross at Domodossola and from Lugano via Como.
Minor lines link Locarno and Domodossola, Bellinzona with the east bank of Lake Maggiore and St Moritz with Tirano
(in the Valtellina).
AUSTRIA & EASTERN EUROPE
Brenner Pass connects with the A22 and parallel rail line south to Verona.
Other autostrade and train lines converge from Eastern Europe through Venice, en route to Verona and Lombardy
along the six-lane A4, one of Italy's busiest motorways.
Bus
Buses converge on Milan from major cities across Europe. Most national and international buses start and terminate at
Milan's Lampugnano Bus Terminal (line 1 - the red line), which is located by the Lampugnano metro station on Via Gi-
ulia Natta, west of the city centre.
Eurolines ( 0861 199 19 00; www.eurolines.it ) A consortium of European coach companies that operates across
Europe with offices in all major European cities.
Autostradale ( 02 7200 1304; www.autostradale.it ) Runs the bulk of Italian national services and has a ticket office
at the main tourist office. It also sells international tickets for Eurolines services.
Car & Motorcycle
If driving, you'll need:
» proof of ownership of a private vehicle or proof of car rental
» a valid national licence plate
» a sticker identifying the car's country of registration (unless it has the standard EU number plates with the blue strip
and country ID)
» car registration certificate or card
