In-Depth Information
Christ's profoundly tragic gaze, though, shows a clear dialogue with the work of Leonardo
da Vinci who was working in Milan at the same time.
In the same way as Bramante, Brescian artist Vicenzo Foppa, who frescoed the Portin-
ari chapel in Sant'Eustorgio, combined the perspective-based classicism of Mantegna with
the intense compassion and realism of Leonardo.
Better known as an architect, Bramante embarked on numerous architectural projects in the city, most
notably the church of Santa Maria presso San Satiro. With a tiny plot to work on, Bramante used all his
illusionistic skills as a painter to create the illusion of a grander space with his theatrical trompe l'œil
apse.
