Set on a peaceful
square in central Como, the hotel occupies a renovated 17th-century building with a pleas-
ant internal courtyard. Rooms, which exude the warmth that comes from hardwood floors,
look either onto the square or the courtyard.

It would
be difficult to feel more deeply ensconced in the rural world. Off the Pian del Tivano, a
high country plain some 7km from lakeside Nesso, this farm in dairy country offers four
simple rooms. To the front of the house are views over thickly forested valleys, while be-
hind, spring flowers carpet the slopes (where there are some swings for kids). It lies 1km
off the main road (look for Via Battista Longoni, opposite the helipad and the sign to Al-
bergo Dosso, 1.5km east of Zelbio). It serves meals too (€20 per person).

In the heart of
Lezzeno (the longest village on Lake Como), 11km southwest of Bellagio, this is a comfy
family hotel in a village off the mainstream tourist radar. Singles look inland but the best
doubles have balconies with lake views. Across the road, take breakfast with a lake breeze
in the hotel restaurant. Just below the restaurant, the hotel has sun loungers along a
wooden boardwalk and access to a whole range of water activities. It operates April to
October.

A 15-minute
(1km) walk from Bellagio along cobbled lanes leads to sheltered Pescallo, a tiny port.
Pescallo's quiet hotel is right on the water (and the pergola referred to shades a fine res-
taurant jutting out over it). The 16th-century one-time convent has pleasant rooms, some
of which look directly over the lake.
