On a gentle
rise above the station, but within a 10-minute walk of the old town, this excellent place is
worth considering for its large, modern rooms that punch above their three-star rating. It's
worth paying a little extra for the balcony rooms which are large and light-filled; those on
the back side of the building are smaller.

Tucked in behind the Visconti clan castle, this hotel has something of the bearing
of a castle itself, with its five storeys, fine arches and Mediterranean feel. Inside, grand
fireplaces, heavy rugs and the 16th-century restaurant all chime in to add atmosphere, and
the pool adds to the Med mood. Rooms are somewhat simpler, the occasional four-poster
bed notwithstanding.

charming place above a cafe and art gallery weds personal attention to a designer aesthet-
ic. Some rooms have mock frescoes, others sport leopard-print sofas and all have Ne-
spresso coffee machines. Highly recommended.
