Accommodation
Where to Stay
Accommodation around the Italian Lakes ranges from mountain huts and grand lakeside
villas to fashion- conscious design digs in Milan. Given the popularity of the region, genu-
ine value can be hard to come by so in this chapter we've focused on independent accom-
modation options that offer charm, good value and a heartfelt welcome.
Although it is always preferable to stay as close to key sights as possible, striking out in-
to the countryside offers its own rewards and some of the regions best experiences in small
locande (inns) and charming agriturismi (farmstays), which often offer a range of family-
friendly activities, such as a swimming pool, horse riding and bikes. They proliferate in the
hillsides and mountains back from the lakes and in wine regions such as the Valtenesi,
Franciacorta and Valpolicella. B&Bs are an increasingly popular alternative to hotels in re-
gional towns, although there is a dearth of quality options in Milan.
For those looking for a base for a week or two, there is an enormous variety of apart-
ments and villas around the lakes. Campgrounds, too, can be a good option for families,
particularly around Lake Garda, where some boast stunning locations and offer large
resort-style facilities.
Pricing
The price indicators refer to the cost of a double room with private bathroom and include
breakfast unless otherwise noted. Where half board (breakfast and dinner) is included, this
is mentioned in the price. All hotels in the region now apply a tourist tax to overnight stays
(€0.60 to €3.50 per person per night).
