In-Depth Information
(Via Capitanato; 10am-5pm) This palace was home to Malcesine's governor when it
was ruled by the Republic of Venice, largely between 1405 and 1797. A single, large hall
leads onto a secluded waterfront terrace through an archway that frames a beautiful lake
view.
CASTLE
Castello Scaligero
(Via Castello; adult/child €6/2; 9.30am-6.30pm Tue-Sun) From Via Capitanato winding lanes lead to
the chalky-white Castello Scaligero. This late-6th-century fortress was built by the Franks
and consolidated by the Della Scala family, who ruled Malcesine between 1277 and 1387.
The poet Goethe thought the castle so beautiful he sketched it, was mistaken for a spy and
temporarily thrown into its cells.
Funivia Malcesine-Monte Baldo
FUNICULAR
( 045 740 02 06; www.funiviedelbaldo.it ; Via Navene Vecchia; adult/reduced return €19/15; 8am-7pm Apr-
Aug, to 6pm Sep, to 5pm Oct) Jump aboard this cable car and glide 1760m above sea level for
spectacular views - rotating cabins reveal the entire lake and the surrounding mountains
spread out like a brightly coloured, textured map. For the first 400m the slopes are
covered in oleanders and olive and citrus trees - after that, oak and chestnut take over.
Getting off the cable car at the intermediate station of San Michele (Malcesine to San
Michele one way/return €5/7) opens up some excellent hikes; pick up a map from the
tourist office before you set out. The hour-long walk back to Malcesine reveals a rural
world of hillside houses and working farms.
There are also several panoramic mountain biking trails down from the summit.

400,000kg of olives and 75,000L of oil annually. Prices of the cold-pressed extra virgin
DOP oil range from €11 for 0.5L to €52 for 5L.
