LAKE GARDA'S OLIVE OIL
Lake Garda's microclimate resembles the Mediterranean's, ensuring ideal olive-growing conditions. The lake's
banks produce a tiny 1% of Italy's olive oil, but the product is renowned for being light, soft and sweet. Some 15
varieties of olives are grown here; the local black fruit produces subtler tasting oil, while the green olives are spi-
cier - the oil makers' skill lies in achieving the perfect blend. Lake Garda's lighter oils work well with fish, the
medium blends are delicious drizzled over mozzarella, and the stronger, spicier varieties are superb with grilled
meats and soup. Locals advise not to use the best oils for salads, arguing if you're adding vinegar it ruins the
taste.
Among the places you can tour the olive groves, sample and purchase the oil are Frantoio San Felice del
Benaco ( Click here ) and Comincioli ( Click here ) in the Valtenesi and the Consorzio Olivicoltori di Malcesine
( Click here ) in Malcesine.
