WORTH A TRIP
CASTELLO DEL GRUMELLO
A 9km detour southwest of Sarnico brings you to Grumello del Monte, dominated by the partly overgrown Cas-
tello del Grumello ( 348 30 362 43; www.castellodigrumello.it ; adult/child €10/5; by appt), now part of a
winery where you can book guided tours with a glass of produce thrown in. Indeed, this is one of northern Italy's
lesser-known wine areas, the Valcalepio .

Lovere & Bossico
POP 5601 (LOVERE), 997 (BOSSICO)
Perched on the lake's northwestern tip, the port town of Lovere is a gem, with a working
harbour and a wealth of walking trails nearby. Its cobbled old town, punctuated by the oc-
casional medieval tower, curves around the harbour, shadowed by a leafy lakefront prom-
enade. Those in need of an art shot should consider the waterfront Accademia Tadini ( 035
96 27 80; www.accademiatadini.it ; Via Tadini 40; adult/concession €7/5; 3-7pm Tue-Sat, 10am-noon & 3-7pm Sun
& holidays May-Sep, 3-7pm Sat, 10am-noon & 3-7pm Sun & holidays Apr & Oct) , home to a considerable art
collection with works by Jacopo Bellini, Il Parmigiano, Giambattista Tiepolo, Francesco
Hayez, Antonio Canova and more.
Those with vehicles might want to drive 12km out of town and up into the hills behind
Lovere to the hamlet of Bossico (900m). Several panoramic viewpoints offer great vistas
over Lake Iseo from the village and nearby. Esmate, reached by Riva di Solto, 6km south
of Lovere, offers further great lookout points over the lake.
There's a tourist office (
035 96 21 78; Piazza XIII Martiri 34, Lovere;
9.30am-12.30pm Mon-Thu,
9.30am-12.30pm & 2-5pm Fri, 9am-12.30pm & 2-5.30pm Sat & Sun) in Lovere.
