Monte Isola
The towering island at the south end of Lake Iseo is easily the lake's most striking feature
and merits an effort to get to know. Francesco Sforza granted the people of Monte Isola
special fishing rights in the 15th century. Its people, whose ancestors may have lived here
in Roman times, were also known for their handmade fishing nets. Perched on Europe's
biggest lake island (4.28 sq km), they were largely self-sufficient in basic land produce. A
handful of villages are scattered around the island. From Carzano , in the northeast (where
many boats land), you can climb rough stairs to scattered rural settlements and follow a
path to the top of the island (599m). The town hall is in Siviano , on the northwest shore. A
15km trail allows you to walk or cycle right around the island.
Eating
Ristorante Monte Isola
( 030 982 52 84; www.ristorantemonteisola.it ; Località Carzano 144, Carzano; meals €25-35; noon-3pm Tue,
noon-3pm & 7-10pm Wed-Sun) It's worth jumping on a boat in Sale Marasino just to get across to
Monte Isola and plonk yourself down in this restaurant. Those with their own boat can tie
up at the restaurant's landing. The deal here is simple enough: nicely prepared meals dom-
inated by lake fish, both in first and second courses. And when you're not eating, you can
just gaze outside over the water.
