LAKE ISEO & AROUND
Less than 100km from both Bergamo and Brescia, Lake Iseo (aka Sebino) is one of the
least known Lombard lakes. Shut in by soaring mountains, it's a magnificent sight. About
halfway along the lake, a mountain soars right out of the water.
With the exception of the south shore and a series of tunnels at the northeast end of the
lake, the road closely hugs the water on its circuit around Lake Iseo and is especially dra-
matic south of Lovere. Various back roads also lead high up behind Lovere for magnificent
views.
To the lake's north stretches the Valle Camonica, famed for its Stone Age rock carvings.
To the south stretches the rolling Franciacorta wine country and, to the west, the picture-
book-pretty Lake Endine.
Getting Around
BOAT
Navigazione sul Lago d'Iseo ( 035 97 14 83; www.navigazionelagoiseo.it ) ferries zigzag their way along
the length of the lake with stops around Monte Isola. There are also fairly regular runs
between Lovere and Pisogne in the north.
Up to eight daily services (only two from September to April) run the whole way from
Sarnico to Pisogne (a trip that can take two to three hours depending on stops, €6.65) and
vice versa. Small boats make the quick crossing (10 minutes, every half-hour) from Sale
Marasino and Sulzano, on the east shore, respectively to Carzano and Peschiera Maraglio
on Monte Isola (€2.20/3.60 one way/return).
BUS
From Bergamo, SAB ( 035 28 90 00; www.sab-autoservizi.it ) operates services (Line E) to Sarnico
(€3.30, 50 minutes) and Tavernola Bergamasca. Line D also goes to Sarnico, while Line C
runs via Lake Endine to Lovere and on to Boario in the Valle Camonica. The same com-
pany also has a service along the Valle Camonica.
CAR
From Bergamo or Brescia you can take the A4 motorway then turn north to Sarnico. Other-
wise, the SS42 road east out of Bergamo leads past Lake Endine to Lovere, while the S
