WINNING WINE REGIONS
The plains around Bergamo, Brescia and Cremona are home to some respected, if little-known, wine-producing
regions, which include the following:
» Botticino A small area 9.5km east of Brescia, where reds are made using barbera and marzemino grapes.
» Cellatica Another tiny area just northwest of Brescia, with similar reds to Botticino.
» Franciacorta South of Lake Iseo is this area celebrated for its sparkling white and rosé wines; look out also for
satèn , a blanc de blanc almost exclusively made of chardonnay grapes.
» San Colombano al Lambro Family-run wineries produce small quantities of surprising reds and whites from a
tiny enclave 15km south of Lodi.
» Valcalepio This up-and-coming area east of Bergamo produces merlot-cab sauv blends and a good white.
