In-Depth Information
Orientation
High above the lake, the road through Varenna passes two luxurious villas and the town's
main square, Piazza San Giorgio, before continuing north and rejoining the main lakeside
S road. A series of lanes-cum-stairways slithers down the hill past bunched-up houses to
the lake.
Those arriving by ferry land at Piazzale Martiri della Libertà. From there, a 15- to
20-minute stroll follows the shore south and cuts up to Piazza San Giovanni and the
town's main attractions.

Getting There & Away
If driving, take the slip road just before the tunnel coming from either north or south.
Metered street parking is almost impossible on weekends, but there's an underground car
park (€2 per hour) opposite the entrance to Villa Monastero.
Regular ferries connect Varenna with Como (€12, 2¼ hours), Bellagio (€4.60, 15 to 20
minutes) and further afield. A car ferry runs to Bellagio and on to Cadennabia.
HIKING
Waymarked walking paths criss-cross the Parco della Grigna Settentrionale; look for the red-and-white signs with
path numbers or similarly coloured paint splotches. Some trails include challenging vie ferate (where iron railings
or other aids have been installed for climbing) and others require mountaineering experience. The tourist offices
in Varenna ( Click here ) and Lecco ( 0341 29 57 20; www.turismo.provincia.lecco.it ; Via Nazario Sauro 6;
9am-1pm & 2.30-6pm) can provide brochures, but you should seek proper hiking maps scaled at 1:25,000 in
local bookshops before undertaking the more challenging walks.
