Mantegna in Mantua

5 Maverick Mantegna (1431-1506) was a carpenter's son who married into the ac-
claimed Bellini clan in Venice, painted a golden altar in Verona, frescoed the Belvedere
chapel in Rome and finally became court painter in Mantua in 1460. His flinty landscapes
and radical foreshortening of perspective demonstrate a sculptural approach to painting.
Cristo Morto , in the Brera gallery ( Click here ) in Milan, and the Camera degli Sposi
(Bridal Chamber) in the Palazzo Ducale ( Click here ; pictured) in Mantua still have the
power to shock and amaze.
