Argegno & Pigra
693 (ARGEGNO), POP 270 (PIGRA)
Argegno is the departure point into the mountains on the Funivia Argegno-Pigra ( 031 81 08
44; one way/return adult €2.90/3.90, child €1.70/2.40; 8.30am-noon & 2.30-6pm, shorter hrs in winter) . The
cable car (about 300m north of Piazza Roma) makes the five-minute climb to the 860m-
high village of tiny Pigra every 30 minutes. From the square where the cable car arrives
and from the grounds of the tiny Chiesa di Santa Margherita, the views back down over
the lake are beautiful. Pigra itself warrants some wandering along its centuries-old lanes
and stairways.
In Argegno, Barchetta ( 031 82 11 05; www.ristorantebarchetta.it ; Piazza Roma 2, Argegno; meals €25-30;
noon-2.30pm & 7-9.30pm Tue-Sun) , the 'Little Boat', appropriately enough, specialises in lake
fish and, come autumn, dishes using mushrooms and truffles. A few tables are scattered
along the footpath, but dining inside is a more refined experience. The food is fabulous.
Whichever pasta you start with, leave room for the abundant misto pesce di lago (a mixed
grill of lake fish).
