Trattoria La Vignetta
( 0344 344 70 55; www.lavignetta.it ; Via Monte Grappa 32; meals €30-35; noon-3pm & 7-10pm Wed-Mon) A
five-minute uphill walk along a jasmine-perfumed residential lane, this hotel restaurant
sits atop a little rise. Inside, the timber-panelled dining room with its antique wooden
tables is a lovely setting for perfectly oven-cooked fish, perhaps preceded by a creamy
risotto. On a balmy evening, take a table in the gravel garden outside and admire the sur-
rounding greenery.

Gatto Nero
( 031 51 20 42; www.gattonerocernobbio.com ; Via Monte Santo 69, Rovenna; meals €60-70; noon-2pm &
7.30-10pm Wed-Sun, 7.30-10pm Tue) Try to book a front-row table for the unobstructed view of
the lake far below this locally renowned eatery above central Cernobbio. The dining
rooms, with dark-tile floors, plenty of timber and low lighting, are pure romanticism. If
it's on the menu, the risotto with fresh lake perch, a local classic, is particularly delicate in
flavour.
The huge scales by the entrance are, mercifully, not used for weighing guests on the
way out.
ITALIAN €€€
Getting There & Away
Ferries shuttle between Como's Pier 4 and Cernobbio (one way adult/child €2.50/1.80)
around every 15 minutes during daylight hours.
LAKE COMO WALKS
The west bank of Lake Como offers widely diverse walking possibilities. For one suggested strolling route of
10km between Cadenabbia and Colonno, to the south, have a look at Greenway del Lago di Como
( www.greenwaydellago.it ) .
For something altogether more challenging, you could head inland and get onto the Via dei Monti Lariani , a
130km trail from Cernobbio in the south to Sorico in the north. Keeping largely to high ground well above the
lake, the journey is punctuated by rifugi (mountain huts) and the occasional village where you can find accom-
modation. Reckon on six days to do the walk comfortably. The trail is part of the 6000km Sentiero Italia marked
out by Club Alpino Italiano, and it's one of the most popular among hikers in Lombardy.
