ASCONA
POP 5453
A phalanx of pretty pastel-hued houses sides up to the placid lakefront in Ascona, Lo-
carno's smaller twin across the Maggia river delta. Behind them, a tangle of little streets
makes for pleasant wandering, with plenty of eateries and bars to distract you. Walking
paths file up into the green hills around the town from the southern end of the waterfront.

Museo Casa Anatta
( 091 785 40 40; www.monteverita.org ; Via Collina 78) The late 19th century saw the arrival of 'back

Their aspirations and eccentricities are the subject of the Museo Casa Anatta on Monte Ver-
ità (take the small bus to Buxi from the post office; Sfr1.20). All sorts of characters, includ-
ing Herman Hesse, dropped by to look at the goings on. The museum was closed for renov-
ations when we visited - ask at the Locarno tourist office ( Click here ) to see if it has re-
opened.
