This classy, light-filled
cafe is right at home on one of the prettiest corners of Locarno's old town. There's a quiet
courtyard and some outdoor tables on the lane, free wi-fi and a small but light menu that
includes plates of local mountain cheeses.

It's not often we
recommend cafeteria-style places, but step inside this appealing place and you'll soon see
that it's different. Laid out like an upmarket produce store, it has everything from salads
and hot meals to snacks. It's particularly good for families or if you're hungry outside of
normal lunch or dinner hours. Getting a table is the only problem.

With bow-tied waiters serving
up decent pizzas, pasta and soups, Svizzero could be anywhere in Italy. Try the local Ti-
cino speciality,
conoglio con polenta
(rabbit with polenta). It's one of the better midrange
place clustered close to Piazza Grande.

Tucked away on a cobbled lane, this place has all the cosy feel of a
grotto. Sit at granite tables beneath the pergola or at timber tables by the fireplace for
chunky pasta and mostly meat dishes. From the lake follow the signs up Vicolo dei Nessi.

One of Locarno's best, Locanda Locarnese's catch-cry is 'creative cooking with
local products.' A small but carefully chosen set of fish and meat mains changes with the
seasons, but whatever you order leave room for the tiramisu with Grand Marnier and or-
ange sorbet. They have a range of lunch set menus (Sfr27.50 to Sfr 50.50) or set tasting
menus (from Sfr74).
