Luino
POP 14,471
The otherwise sleepy town of Luino hosts Lake Maggiore's biggest market ( 8.30am-4.30pm
Wed) on Wednesday year-round. This is no ordinary local flea market; rather it's an enorm-
ous bazaar that snakes off into the surrounding streets with all manner of trash and treas-
ure, not to mention some good street food. The records show that an important weekly
market was first held here in 1535. Today more than 350 stands are set up in the old town
centre, with everything from local cheese to secondhand fashion on sale. Bargain-hunters
come from as far away as the Netherlands.
It's madness if you try to get in here with a vehicle (unless you arrive very early). There
are parking areas south of the town centre for €6 per day, but they fill up fast. Extra ferry
services from the other side of the lake run on market day.
