( www.camelieinmostra.it ) Twice a year, in spring and autumn, a splash of extra floral colour
comes to Verbania Pallanza with a display of more than 200 varieties of camellia in the
gardens of Villa Giulia ( 0323 55 62 81; Corso Zanitello 8) or Villa Rusconi-Clerici
( www.villarusconiclerici.it ; Via Vittorio Veneto) or both. Dates vary, but you are looking at a weekend
in late March or late November.
Settimana del Tulipano
In the last week of April, tens of thousands of tulips erupt in magnificent multicoloured
bloom in Verbania's Villa Taranto.

Eating
Bolongaro
( 0323 50 32 54; Piazza Garibaldi 9, Verbania Pallanza; meals €20-25; noon-2.30pm & 6-9.30pm) Large
pizzas, a wide range of pastas and other mains and a choice between indoor and outdoor
dining have made this is an unremarkable but perenially popular choice along the Verb-
ania Pallanza waterfront.
ITALIAN
Il Burchiello
( 0323 50 45 03; Corso Zanitello 3, Verbania Pallanza; meals €25-30; noon-2pm & 6-9pm Thu-Tue) A mod-
ern eatery close to the Verbania Pallanza waterfront, Il Burchiello does good Italian
staples without ever becoming too adventurous. The spaghetti di frutti di mare is brimful
of mussels and other shellfish, and the pasta is perfectly al dente .

Ristorante Milano
MODERN ITALIAN €€€
( 0323 55 68 16; www.ristorantemilanolagomaggiore.it ; Corso Zanitello 2, Verbania Pallanza; meals €60-70;
noon-2pm & 7-9pm Wed-Sun, noon-2pm Mon; ) It is difficult to imagine a prettier setting for a
meal. Antique-filled Ristorante Milano sits off its own shady gravel-and-lawn garden
where a handful of tables are set up and birdsong provides the background music. It over-
looks Verbania Pallanza's cute port and Isolino San Giovanni. The cuisine is broadly Itali-
an, with some interesting variations on the theme, such as risotto ai petali di rosa (risotto
with rose petals).
